10/21/2011

Over the weekend, Per 4 & 5 should review the notes handout I gave you in class. All periods should make sure they are studying from their study guides for the test Tuesday.

Book sections included on test are sections 2-1 (chemistry), 2-2 (water), and 2-3 (organic compounds)

Thursday, October 20, 2011

10/20/2011

Tonight-read over section 2-3 (organic molecules) and prepare for a reading quiz tomorrow. Focus on bold words!
Also, do organic molecule chart worksheet handed out in class and use book and notes to complete. You don't have to do the "enzyme" side.

Thanks! Also, review for your test Tuesday!

10/19/2011

Tonight, finish review packet we started in class (skip #s 6 & 7).
Also, here is the second half of the study guide for the test on Tuesday:

Organic Chem Study Guide Part 2

Be able to do the following for the coming test!
1. What are the 4 organic molecules and why are they important to living things?

2. What 6 elements are all organisms based on?

3. What is so special about carbon and why is it the basis for life on Earth?

4. Carbohydrates

a. What are their functions?

b. What elements are they based on?

c. Know that the monomer is a monosaccharide, and name/give the chemical formula for the 3 monosaccharides

d. Know that the polymer is a polysaccharide—describe the functions of the important polysaccharides like glycogen, cellulose and starch

5. Lipids

a. Name the 4 functions of lipids.

b. What elements are they based on?

c. Describe the structure of a triglyceride.

d. Name 3 other substances that are fats/lipids (wax, oil, steroids, hormones, etc)

e. Explain the molecular difference between saturated and unsaturated fats, and know which comes from plants and which from animals.

6. Proteins

a. Name at least 4 functions of proteins.

b. What elements are they based on?

c. How many amino acids are found in nature?
d. Name the monomer of proteins and the polymer. What type of bond attaches amino acids together?

e. Explain what an enzyme is and why they’re important.

7. Nucleic Acids

a. What is the function of nucleic acids? What is the shape of a DNA molecule?
b. What are the 3 parts of a nucleotide, the monomer of DNA/RNA?

10/17/2011

Finish packet we began in class that uses sections 2-2 and 2-3 in book. Make sure that you understand all of the water and chemistry content because we're now moving on to Organic Chemistry!

10/14/2011

Over the weekend: Please read the water packet I gave you and the accompanying questions. Do the questions on a separate sheet of paper.
Thanks & have a nice weekend!
Mon we begin organic chemistry and our test on this stuff will be the following Tuesday, (Oct 25) will be your test on chemistry, water, and organic chemistry.

10/12-13/2011

Sorry, homework didn't get posted last night! Because of that mistake you'll have an extra night to do everything, so now all this stuff is due FRIDAY:
1) Read section 2-2 (water) and prepare for a small reading quiz on the section
2) Do H20 worksheet

Thank you!

Tonight's written homework: Dragonfly book: Re-read section 2-1 in textbook and answer section assessment questions 1-4 on p. 39.
Bird book: Re-read section 2-1 in book and answer "check understanding" questions 1-6 on page 31

FYI: If you didn't finish your test corrections today in class you will have to come on Wed or Thursday after school to wrap it up. You'll have from the end of school until 3ish to wrap up. Please plan accordingly! Thanks!

Have a nice long weekend! No written bio HW but reviewing what we've done this week is always helpful!

Thursday, October 6, 2011

10/6/2011

Tonight, please finish the Ionic Bonding worksheet we started in class together. Here are some hints to help:
1) If there are lots of electrons, just draw the outermost shell.
2) You will need multiples of several atoms!
#2-MgI2 (1 Mg, 2 I)
#3-Na2O (2 Na, 1 0)
#4-NaCl
#5- CaCl2 (1 Ca, 2 Cl)
#6- AlCl3 (1 Al, 3 C)
3)If you're still confused you can always come see me in the morning to get help or a HW extension.

ALSO...you got your tests back today! If you didn't do as well as you'd like, I will give everyone the opportunity to earn back half the points they lost by doing some specific test corrections that I will tell you about in class tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

10/4/2011

1) Finish both sides of atomic symbol worksheet from class.
2) Read section 2-1...possible reading quiz!

ALSO...if you want to have an extra copy of the periodic table around for this unit, here's a good one to print out:
